Climate conditions and crowd levels for each month of the year.
January in Geneva tends to be the year's coldest and greyest stretch.
February holds similar temperatures, highs of 7°C (44°F), lows still at -1°C (30°F), but with the year's lightest rainfall at 56mm, and there are days when the fog breaks and the Alps appear with startling clarity above the lake. The city feels quiet and functional rather than festive.
March begins the tentative turn toward spring. Highs climb to 11°C (53°F) and lows to 1°C (34°F), and while 61mm of rain keeps the city damp, the daylight extending daylight past six o'clock changes the mood noticeably. You might see the first outdoor café chairs appear, then disappear again after a cold snap.
April is pleasantly unpredictable. The highs reach 15°C (60°F) and lows 5°C (41°F), but Geneva in April tends to oscillate between warm afternoons and cold, wet days that feel more like February. At 66mm of rainfall it is not the driest month. But the blossoms along the Quai du Mont-Blanc make it one of the prettiest.
May is arguably the most underrated month in Geneva. Highs push to 20°C (68°F), lows settle at 9°C (48°F), and while 79mm of rainfall means you should expect showers, they tend to be brief. The city is green, the lake is a deep blue-grey, and summer crowds have not yet arrived.
June sees Geneva fully animated. Highs reach 24°C (75°F), lows 12°C (54°F), and the lakefront transforms from a commuter path into an actual destination. Rainfall at 84mm is among the year's higher readings. But summer storms here tend to be dramatic and brief.
July is peak season, and with good reason. Highs of 26°C (80°F) and lows of 14°C (58°F) make this the warmest month, and Geneva's position between mountains and lake means the heat rarely becomes oppressive. Rainfall holds at 79mm, mostly in short evening thunderstorms.
August runs almost parallel to July, highs of 26°C (79°F), lows of 14°C (57°F), rainfall of 81mm, with perhaps a slightly fuller sense that summer is at its height. The Fêtes de Genève typically falls in early August and brings fireworks over the lake.
September marks the shift. Highs drop to 21°C (69°F), lows to 10°C (51°F), and rainfall ticks up to 91mm. But the quality of light in Geneva in September has a particular warmth to it. The lake is still warm enough for swimming in the early part of the month, and the Alpine day trips are spectacular with early autumn color.
October is the wettest month, averaging 97mm of rain, and the temperatures pull back sharply, highs of 15°C (59°F), lows of 7°C (44°F). It can feel like autumn arrived overnight. That said, Geneva in October has its own appeal: fewer tourists, the Old Town looking atmospheric under overcast skies, and the vine-growing country around the lake turning golden.
November settles into the grey. Highs are 9°C (48°F), lows 2°C (36°F), rainfall 89mm, and the fog begins its seasonal return. The Christmas markets that open in late November inject some warmth into the city center.
December ends the year crisp and often cloaked in mist. Highs hover at 5°C (42°F), lows dip to 0°C (31°F). Rainfall totals 89mm, sometimes falling as snow at lake level. Reliable snow downtown is never guaranteed. The Geneva Christmas market and the Escalade festival in early December give the month real local flavor. Worth it.
